How to make coloured hair last longer

Having colour-treated hair means that you will inevitably have to do a fair/bit of maintenance – and that’s OK. With the right hair care products at your disposal and access to a few tricks of the trade, you shouldn’t have to overexert yourself when it comes to your hair regimen.

HELLO! For those of you who are new here, we are Rossano Ferretti Parma, an Italian designer haircare brand extending our expert advice to individuals who who want to get the most out of their coloured locks. Whether you have platinum blonde, brunette, black, red, pink, blue (you get the gist of it) treated hair, we want to help you prolong the life of your hair colour. Read on for how to make coloured hair last longer.

Let’s get straight to it:

1. Our first tip – Give your new hair colour time to settle before washing it.Image of Rossano Ferretti Parma's Splendido Colour Maintain Shampoo.

As a rule of thumb, wait a full 72 hours before shampooing freshly coloured hair.

Colour treatments are designed to open the cuticle layer of your hair, making it easier for the pigments to penetrate the shaft. This cuticle layer can take up to 3 days to seal again, which means if you wash your hair too soon after your appointment, it could still be open. This can result in more colour being washed down the drain, something which can be easily avoided. Just think of all the time and money you have spent on your hair colour, only to wash it away prematurely.

Give your hair time to heal and really soak in its new colour before washing it. You can always apply a professional dry shampoo to keep your locks looking fresh and energised in between washes. Our Vivace Dry Shampoo Crème is fantastico!

2. Go sulfate-free

Sulfates in shampoos and conditioners can help to keep your hair clean, however, their potency can strip away infused colours along with dirt. This is a harsh reality for someone who’s just spent hours and a good fortune at the hair salon at the hair salon.

The good news is that there are plenty of brilliant sulfate-free shampoos to choose from.

Take Splendido Colour Maintenance Shampoo as an example. Not only is this formula free from sulfates and other harmful chemicals but it has been designed to ultimately protect and nourish hair that has been exposed to colour. The result: vivid, vibrant and brighter hair with a colour that lasts longer!

3. Get into the habit of rinsing your hair with cold water

Though hot showers are divine and often necessary after a tedious day, they aren’t great for your hair colour. Once again, it all comes down to your hair’s cuticle. When your strands are washed or rinsed in hot water, the heat encourages the cuticle to open. This will expose your colour to the water, and it will run out as a result.

Cold water, on the other hand, helps to keep the cuticle intact. It will allow you to wash your hair properly while keeping your tint safely sealed in your strands. A cold rinse will also help to lock in nourishing and moisturising agents so that your hair is softer and healthier.

4. Turn down the heat

We know – you have freshly coloured hair and all you want to do is style it. Unfortunately, our favourite hairstyling tools can actually make hair colour fade faster. The heat from the gadgets we use strip moisture from our tresses, taking the dye and pigments along with it.

If you must use a hot styling tool, use it on a low heat setting. Applying a professional heat protection spray will also reduce the heat’s effect on your colour.

Stylist tip: try to give your hair time to dry naturally as often as possible to extend the vibrancy of your hair colour, you’ll thank us for this advice later!

The same concept applies to heat from the sun. UV rays can damage hair and cause hair dye to fade. So, wear a hat when you head outdoors or apply a UV protection spray to your hair if you’re not the hat-wearing type.

Our team of colour-specialists recommend using a conditioning treatment once or twice a week, as it will add moisture back into hair. This is important because one of the biggest culprits of faded colour is dry hair. A professional hair mask or conditioning treatment can help to keep hair moisturised and healthy from the comfort of your home.

Without a doubt, the following conditioning products will ultimately moisturise and hydrate your locks, helping them to lock in colour:

  • Splendido Colour Maintain Conditioner – Inspired by the vivid and vital colours of the Italian Riviera, Splendido Conditioner protects and extends the vibrancy of colour-treated hair.
  • Dolce Nourishing Mask – Designed to ultimately moisturise even the driest of hair, the Dolce Hair Mask will keep your locks optimally hydrated so that they retain dyes and pigments for longer.
  • Brillante Protect and Shine Oil – Brillante Oil uses naturally derived ingredients to deeply hydrate, seal and protect coloured hair from the sun’s power, whilst adding a delightful glossy sheen.

Overall, keeping your hair healthy and well-cared for is a way to extend the “life” of your fresh new colour. This can be achieved by maintaining a healthy diet full of wholesome foods, by washing your hair with gentle products that are free from harsh chemicals, and by reducing your hair’s exposure to harmful elements such as heat and chlorine.
