Winter has a way of wreaking havoc on hair, especially in climates where the cold is accompanied by dry and unforgiving air. And lest we forget the indoor heating systems that are suddenly turned on to the max! This constant change between hot and cold environments can frazzle your locks and have them in an annoying disarray. Not to mention that these harsh elements can also suck all the moisture out of your strands, leaving them vulnerable to breakage.
So, hmm, what to do what to do?
The good news is that you don’t have to go into hibernation to maintain the fabulously healthy hair you maintained throughout summer. You can embrace the winter wonderland in all its glory and still keep your strands nourished, moisturised, and soft.
We’ve compiled our favourite winter hair care tips and tricks below so that you don’t have to add your hair to your list of winter woes.
Here goes:
1. Take It Easy on The Shampoo
When we notice we have flakes in our hair (we’re not talking pretty snowflakes – it’s the bothersome dry skin type), we tend to wash our hair more often to try to get rid of them. But this is a big mistake.
Your scalp is really good at regulating its environment, if given the chance. The more you wash your hair, the more you strip your scalp of its natural oils – oils that work wonders at moisturising your skin and hair to protect it from the onset of loose, itchy skin patches that cause flaky skin,
Since you won’t be sweating as much as you did in summer, washing your hair less often shouldn’t be too difficult. You can always use a quality dry shampoo in between washes to keep your locks clean and refreshed.
We’d also like to suggest Vita Rejuvenating Shampoo for when you do cleanse your hair. Inspired by the autumn rains revitalising the Tuscany countryside – this is a shampoo that has been uniquely formulated to bring life to hair that may just be exhausted from summer’s antics.
2. Your Hair’s Thirsty – Give It Something to Drink
Just like the dry air leaves you feeling parched, it also sucks the moisture out of your locks, leaving them in desperate need for moisture. This means that now’s the time to change from your light summer conditioner to a heavier conditioner with nourishing properties.
While you’re at it, you may also want to commit yourself to weekly treatments – such as a hair mask ritual, for example.
Dolce Repair and Nourishing Mask has been formulated using over 97% naturally derived ingredients to ultimately moisturise your hair. It also smells delectably like vanilla and caramel; sweet and warm scents to carry you through the dormant months.
3. Cut Down on Your Heat-Heavy Styling Routine
We know that it feels amazing when the warm air from your blow-dryer hits your skin in winter, but it’s time to give your hair just a little break from heated hair tools after all that summertime fun. Not only can hot styling equipment damage hair, but it also dries it out further, leaving you with broken ends and annoying fly-aways.
Try giving your hair a chance to dry naturally or make sure you use a professional heat protection spray if you can’t resist your flat/curling iron.
We also suggest that you give your hair room to breathe this winter by loosening your styles a little. Avoid tight braids and knots and allow your hair to hang free, or tie it up into a soft plaited style – or a fun messy bun!
Apply Brillante Oil to your hair for a touch of shine!
4. Be Gentle on Your Hair
This applies if your hair is already in a fragile state but also works as a preventative measure to help avoid breakage altogether.
• Ditch your towel and use a soft cotton shirt to gently dry your hair. This way, you’ll reduce the friction that causes frizzy and knotted locks.
• Brush your hair gently when it’s damp, it’s more likely to snag this way. We also suggest you use a soft detangling brush or a wide-toothed comb to gently ease knots out of your tresses.
• Sleep with a satin cap on and pop one on under your beanie when you head outdoors. Coarse fabrics can cause split ends and breakage. Silky and soft fabrics such as satin, on the other hand, will protect your hair and reduce friction between strands. Satin will also hold in heat better if you’re trying to get the most out of your leave-in conditioner.
