How to Keep Your Hair Fresh In-Between Washes

While washing and conditioning your hair at the start of every day may make you feel fresh and energised, you’re unfortunately not doing your locks any favours. The good news is that you can still create that clean and volumized look and feel – even if you only wash your hair a few times a week!

For some, reaching a “few times a week hair-washing goal” is going to be easy. For example, you’ll fare pretty well with longer periods in between hair washes if you have very dry or naturally curly hair.

If you have limp lacklustre locks, scaling back on your washings may be more of a challenge – but the goal is not impossible.

At this point, you may be wondering why we advocate not washing your tresses too often.

Allow us to explain –

Why You Shouldn’t Wash Your Hair Every Day

Cleansing your hair and scalp and maintaining body hygiene is important. We’re by no means endorsing dirty hair! What we are trying to assist you with is maintaining healthy hair. We want you to have strong, soft, and radiant locks – as brilliant as the immaculate, warm and glistening Amalfi coast that we draw our inspiration from (hello – we’re Rossano Ferretti Parma)!

HOWEVER.

If you shampoo too often, you’re interfering with your hair’s natural environment – an environment that has been designed to encourage healthy hair growth.

According to hair biologists, your scalp is covered in billions of good and helpful bacteria/microbes. These microbes actively assist in maintaining your scalp’s pH levels and fight off bad bacteria.

Okay, so what does this have to do with hair?

If you wash your hair too often using harsh cleansers, then you upset the natural creation of good bacteria, leaving bad bacteria to cause scalp problems, such as fungi and inflammation. This, in turn, discourages healthy hair growth.

At the same time, you also wash away natural sebum (oils) created by your scalp. This oil is released to protect your hair from the elements whilst nourishing and moisturising it.

Here’s how you can keep your hair fresh in between washes:

It Starts with Baby Steps

If you’re used to washing your hair every day and if your hair gets oily quickly, then the “baby steps” approach especially applies to you. What we’re trying to say is “don’t try to get to a once-a-week wash straight away”! Instead, you can:

  1. Start by shampooing your hair every other day for a month.
  2. Then, every third day for a month.
  3. Then, every fourth day for a month.

Okay – you get the gist of it we’re sure!

Apply this method until your hair has adapted to being washed once a week only. This way, it won’t go through terribly oily phases where it looks damp, dirty, and listless.

And then…

Make Dry Shampoo Your New Best Friend

Refresh hair in between washes by using an excellent dry shampoo. Hair that hasn’t been washed tends to feel oily and limp. Dry shampoo products are designed to absorb excess oils on the hair and scalp, keeping them feeling cleaner and volumized for a fresher look and feel.

We adore Rossano Ferretti Parma’s Vivace Dry Crème. This delightful formula has been infused with sage, rosemary and peppermint; ingredients that absorb oil, sweat and odour to leave locks clean and revived between washes.

Use a Shower Cap When You Swim, Bathe or Shower

To prevent your hair from looking frizzy with a mind of its own, use a shower cap when you swim or shower. This way, you can prevent heat, humidity and stray water droplets from getting onto your hair, which may make it look frazzled and in need of a wash.

Use the Right Type of Shampoo

The right shampoo can make all the difference. In fact, the wrong shampoo can encourage your hair to feel greasier quicker because it disturbs the good bacteria from doing their thang – as we discussed above.

We caution against using shampoos with sulphates or silicones because they can be too drying or too heavy. They cleanse your hair so deeply that they strip all the good sources your scalp produces along with the dirt.

Instead, look for a gentle, rejuvenating, sulphate-free cleanser that is balanced with natural ingredients that stimulate the scalp for healthy hair growth.
