Fabulous Summer Hair Care Tips from the Professionals!

Hazy summer days are on the horizon, and this means it’s time to prep your hair for a new season. To avoid frazzled, sun-dried locks, we look to our Italian haircare experts for tips for summer hair care. Here’s what they had to say:

Hydration and Conditioning Are Key

Hair that’s well hydrated is more likely to be healthy and less vulnerable to summer’s harsh elements, says the Rossano Ferretti (RF) team.

According to Rossano Ferretti himself, “moisturised hair won’t absorb as much saltwater or pool chemicals, it also won’t be as susceptible to frizz.”

A key solution is to wash your hair with a sulfate-free hydrating shampoo, and then follow up with a deep hydrating mask or conditioner.

For this, the RF team recommends Dolce Repair & Nourish Shampoo and Dolce Repair & Nourish Hair Mask. This duo won the 2022 Beauty Bible Award for best shampoo and conditioner – and for good reason! Drawing inspiration from the contrasting beauty of the sea and mountains in the Abruzzo region of Italy, the formulas have been designed for all textures of dry hair with the purpose of deeply hydrating and de-stressing each strand.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen for Hair

Adopt a new summer habit of applying a hair care product that contains UV filters. Just like your skin needs sunscreen to protect it from the sun, your hair also needs a barrier that will help to keep your colour from fading and your locks from getting scorched.

“Wearing a wide-brimmed hat when you’re outside is also not a bad idea,” says the team. “Plus, they’re alla moda (fashionable)!”

Avoid Excessive Heat

Fall into a summer hair care routine where you ditch the hot styling tools as often as possible. Instead, let your locks air dry in the warm summer breeze.

“Hot tools can leave your hair dry, broken, and vulnerable. So, avoid heat styling when you can and if you must use your dryer, straightener, or curling tongs, remember to apply a heat-protective product beforehand,” says Rossano.

Wash Your Hair Less Often

Washing your hair every day can leave it looking dull, depleted, and lifeless. This is because you strip your locks of natural enriching oils every time you shampoo them.

One of the RF team’s summer hair tips is to wash your hair 2-3 times a week only. This way, you give your strands a chance to self-heal and soak up all the natural oils that leave them looking buoyant and glossy.

“You can always freshen up with a dry shampoo,” they said.

Protect Your Hair While Swimming

Most beach hair care tips will hint at how a swim cap can be the ultimate barrier between your hair and the harsh salt or chemical-laden pool water. This advice isn’t wrong, a swim cap can help to protect your hair while swimming. But, if you’re not one to don a cap and it’s just not your style, then an alternative is to layer your hair with moisture and protective oils.

“I always recommend Brillante Oil to my summer-loving clients,” says Rossano. “This magical haircare formula uses ingredients such as grape seed, sunflower, and rosemary to deeply hydrate, seal, and protect hair from harsh elements.”

The rest of the team jumped in to remind us that a good leave-in conditioner can also be effective. “If your hair is saturated with moisture, it won’t absorb as much salt water or pool chemicals,” they re-iterated.

Protect Your Colour

To keep your hair looking radiant and bursting with colour for the summer months, you need to protect it from the sun.

An excellent product for colour protection is our Dolce Satin Glow Booster. This luxury formula can be used when air drying hair as well as when blow-drying it.

The team then went on to highlight this product’s amazing ability to reduce colour loss while adding a glorious velvet-like sheen to your locks – sounds like the perfect summer look, right?

Wear Loose Styles

Summer is the perfect time to let your hair dry and flow naturally.

So, as one of the RF team’s top natural hair care tips for summer, they suggest you stick to natural styles that require minimum styling. For example, if you have naturally straight hair, avoid styling it into tight curls when there is a lot of humidity in the air.

Rossano recommends washing your hair at night and piling it up in a loose bun, a braid, or ponytail before heading to bed. “When you wake up, you’ll have nice, natural beachy waves,” he says.

Keep Hair Trimmed Regularly

Nothing makes your hair feel as fabulous as a fresh cut. Ridding yourself of those dry, split ends is an invigorating feeling that’s as good for the soul as it is for your hair.

This is why our hair stylists suggest trimming your hair at the start of summer and then once again during mid-summer – although your stylist will know your hair growth best and should be able to offer the best, personalised advice!

When you remove the ends of your hair, you also help to smoothen the appearance of your locks while reducing frizz.

Keep Hair Frizz-Free and Protected from Dry Split Ends

The last of our summer hair care tips from the experts focus on how to protect your hair in summer by targeting split ends.

Hair that’s healthy and maintained is your best defence against frizz and listless locks. Along with regular trims and conditioning, a drop or two of an anti-frizz oil or serum can help smoothen hair and add shine.

Rossano says that in this regard, you can’t go wrong with Prodigio Regenerating Oil. “This formula can be used daily on wet or dry hair to seal split ends and provide protection for healthy, vibrant, fabulous locks!”

“It’s the perfect poolside companion,” he says!
