How to Style Your Hair During the Winter Season

Whether you’re planning to jet off to the Alps for a ski trip or simply want to do winter at home in style, our team of renowned hair professionals have you covered! If you haven’t heard, fabulous hair is our thing.

As the chill sets in and that arctic wind starts to blow, we want you to continue to radiate like summer itself – like the blissful summers on Italy’s Amalfi coast that we draw our inspiration from.

But before we delve in and share some of winter’s most trending and convenient hairstyles, we’d like to emphasise that healthy hair is the epitome of any look.

A quick list of hair care tips for cold weather:Image of two girls side by side. One of them with very curly afro dark hair and the other with long, wavy, auburn hair.

  • Deep condition your hair at least once a week. From indoor heating to dry winds, winter has a way of depleting the moisture in your hair. Use a nourishing hair mask or ultra-moisturising conditioner to make sure your hair stays soft and pliable.
  • Wear a hat. It’s time to accessorise with your favourite beanies, ushankas, and berets.  A hat will protect your hair from the cold elements whilst locking in moisture. Tip: fight static electricity under your hat by using a serum or oil like our Prodigio Oil.
  • Avoid frequent hair washes. If you wash your hair too often, then you’re not giving it enough time to absorb the natural, nourishing oils that your scalp produces. At the same time, your shampoo is probably stripping away the little moisture that your hair does have. Since you’re less likely to build up a sweat in winter, stick to a routine where you cleanse your tresses once or twice a week only. Substitute the days in between with a quality dry shampoo for a fresh and volumized look.
  • Turn down the heat. Avoid heat styling as often as possible. Hot hair tools can suck moisture from your strands, leaving them brittle and vulnerably exposed to winter’s harsh elements. Instead, allow your locks to dry naturally and then twist and prod them into the protective winter hairstyle-ideas we’re about to share with you.

5 Stylish Designer Hairstyles to Try This Winter

1.The Messy Bun

“Cool” and casual messy buns are all the rage these days. They’re also super easy to create and the no-fuss look is intriguingly bohemian!

How to achieve “the” look: Styling your hair into a messy bun is as simple as loosely gathering your hair, gently scrunching it together, and then securing it in place with an elastic band. You can then “zhuzh” your bun up using hair clips and other accessories for a more accentuated look. A messy bun can be worn high or low – lower would be more convenient for winter antics.

2. The Top Knot

A top not can be smooth and sleek or it can follow in the lines of the messy bun we raved about above. Since we’ve been through the basics of the wilder top knot, let’s give the more sophisticated option some time in the limelight.

How to achieve “the” look: The sleek top knot is typically classier in appeal, although you can still “casual it down” with a pair of jeans and a stylish sweater. And – because you’re twisting your hair into a tighter bun, this is a style that can protect your strands from the harsh winter elements. It really is such a versatile look!

Tip: use a smoothing serum such as Rossano Ferretti Parma’s Intenso smoothening and softening serum for a bun that’s optimally smooth and shiny.

3. Adult Pigtails

Cute pigtails aren’t reserved for kids. Oh no! In fact, with the right type of texturizing and a complementing outfit, they can look quite tantalising! They’re also conveniently compatible with ski helmets and hats.

How to achieve “the” look: We suggest adding volume to your roots to “age up” the pigtails. Teasing your roots will also help to prevent your hair from flattening when you do wear a hat or helmet (use a professional volumizing mousse or spray to lock in your “tease”). Other ideas include covering the hair ties with a section of hair and curling your locks to create wavy volumized pigtails.

*Loose and messy fish-tail braids are also a trending look can work for pigtails – especially when paired with a boho-beanie!

4. The French Braid (or Double Braids)

This is a classic look for windy days. It’s also one of those hairstyles that can be dressed up or down, depending on what you have on your schedule for the day! Whether you’re flying down the slopes or simply want a style that keeps your hair protected and out of your face – a French braid is THE fallback.

How to achieve “the” look: Ask your hairstylist to help you master the art of French braiding.  You can fasten your braid backwards for a traditional look or you can secure it to the side, low to the nape of your neck, or at the root. You can even wear two braids or join several braids for a more elaborate do.

5. Texturized or Slicked Low Ponytails

The ponytail is one hairstyle that will never go out of fashion. For wintertime, we prefer ponytails worn low. This way you can don your hats in comfort and still look fabulously primped and preened.

How to achieve “the” look: A sleek, low ponytail is easy to achieve. Simply make sure that your hair has been straightened (use a straightening serum for the best results) and then fasten your hair at the nape of your neck. For a textured ponytail, you can use a curling wand to create voluminous curls or you can tease your strands for a “messy” ponytail that adds a bit of “grrrr” to your look.

* Remember your crimping iron that made its debut back in the 80s? Whip that out for an interesting, texturized ponytail that’s catwalk-worthy!
