How To Get Rid Of Greasy Hair : Professional Tips

Greasy hair – it happens to us all at some point. Whether it’s the summer climate that causes us to sweat or the mere (non-sharable) fact that we don’t always have time to hit the shower three times a day in order to avoid feeling sticky and hot, chances are, it’s going to happen. BUT – as inconvenient as oily hair is, it’s a somewhat misunderstood issue. Let’s start by uncovering what causes greasy hair.

Having a greasy scalp isn’t as terrible as it sounds. In fact, the natural oils secreted by your body protect your scalp and hair from environmental damage. They also help to nourish your strands and lock in moisture to keep them hydrated and healthy. Of course, there can be too much of a good thing, and hair that’s excessively oily is far from fabulous.

Why does my hair get greasy so quickly?

If our bodies didn’t secrete oils, our skin would dry out and we would be extremely vulnerable to harmful elements. So, just like the skin on your face and the rest of your body, the sebaceous glands on your scalp produce oil as a protective barrier to keep all the good “stuff” in and all the bad “stuff” out.

Since we’re all wired a little differently, some people will produce more oil than others. It comes down to genetics, really.

However …

If your hair hasn’t always been prone to greasiness, it could be that you are using haircare products that are causing build-up or it may be that you’re over-washing it.

FACT: Washing your hair daily is not the best way to combat greasy locks. According to our founder and Italian-born hair guru, Rossano, over-washing your hair can be a common cause of a greasy scalp:

When you wash your hair too often, you stimulate oil production into overdrive because your scalp is continuously trying to make up for the lost oil”.

Okay – so, we’ve established that a go-to method of washing hair daily to get rid of grease is counterproductive. This means that we’re left with the opposite approach of washing our hair less often. While this seems counterintuitive, with patience and determination, this is what could slow down oil production in the long run.

Start the process by cleansing your hair every second day and then slowly work your way to cleansing your locks once or twice a week only. While you handle the adjustment period, your scalp’s oil production  will eventually level out.

Tip: keep your hair fresh and energized in between washes by applying dry shampoo.

Try Vivace Dry Shampoo Crème. Unlike traditional dry shampoo brands, Vivace’s ‘creme’ texture absorbs easily into hair to soak up excess oils without leaving residue or talc behind. Traditionally dry shampoo sprays have a habit of leaving hair with a slight grey-white, powdery look whilst the talc texture clogs up pores, which, incidentally forces your scalp to produce even more oil! That’s why our Dry Shampoo Crème is a popular and effective alternative.

What is the best shampoo for greasy hair?

Finding the right shampoo and the best conditioner for greasy hair can make all the difference, even if your greasy locks are genetically inclined.

Once again, we looked to Rossano for advice –

“Use shampoos that are free of parabens and sulfates, as they’re gentler on your hair.”

Sulfate-free shampoos strip less oil from the hair, stopping it from over-producing oil.

greasy hairOur number one go-to shampoo for targeting greasy hair is Vita Rejuvenating Shampoo.

“This luxury haircare product is excellent for scalp care and promotes healthy hair growth. The natural formula has been created to rejuvenate damaged locks that often get greasy too quickly”, he told us.

Why is my hair still greasy after a wash?

If you still have greasy hair after washing your locks, then it could be that you’re applying too much conditioner to your roots or that you are not rinsing the conditioner out thoroughly.

As a rule of thumb, only apply conditioner to the lengths of your hair and avoid the roots completely. This will keep your scalp from getting greasy before it’s even had the chance to secrete its own oils.

Product build-up can also be a problem. To stop greasy hair developing, make sure you wash your hair properly to remove all traces of products that you’ve recently used.

Finally, check your hairbrush to make sure that there’s no product stuck between the bristles. Sometimes the mousse, hairspray, or treatment we used to style our hair the day before can turn sticky overnight, and when we brush our hair, the stickiness is transferred to our strands. This is something often overlooked when looking for how to get rid of greasy hair. To avoid this dilemma, we recommend investing in salon-quality hair products.

Greasy hair can make your tresses feel limp, lifeless, and a little grimy so it’s understandable that you want to avoid it at all costs. Do yourself a favor and take our advice – we get our tips from industry-leading experts after all. Ciao ciao!
