Sometimes, you just need to add a little colour (Colore) to your life. Like changing the shade of your hair, for example. Adding a new and fresh hue to your locks is one way to feel re-energised and gorgeous! They do say that change is as good as a holiday, after all. Whether it be a subtle balayage or more daring tones of blonde and red (or pink and blue), experimenting with colour can be defining, empowering, and just plain fun!
What’s not fun, however, is sitting with damaged, dull, and faded hair just a week after your visit to the salon. The thing is, colour-treated hair needs a little extra love and care if you want it to stay looking vibrant and healthy. This extra attention will help your strands to hold colour for much longer, leaving you with that “just stepped out of the salon” feeling.
The question is –
How do you take care of coloured hair?
Below, we’ll share some of our best-kept secrets with you. We’ll give you advice on what type of premium hair care products you should be using, advice for washing and treating your hair, and we’ll throw in some extra tips. Here goes:
Patiently (Pazientemente) Wait 72 Hours Before Shampooing Freshly Coloured Hair
Many colour treatments work by opening the cuticle layers of your hair strands for deep penetration. After your treatment, the cuticles will close slowly to seal in the pigment. If you wash your hair too soon (when the cuticles are still vulnerable), then you risk washing the colour away and your new shade will fade much faster.
It can take up to 72 hours for the cuticle layers to fully close – so, the longer you wait to wash your hair after it has been coloured, the more time the pigment will have to seal itself into your locks, making it last longer as a result.
We do recommend to use a sealing and protective product, for the first few days after you have applied colour which can of course be applied every day to help reduce colour fade. Why not try our Prodigio Regenerating Oil which will not only help seal and protect hair but also nourishes and helps sela split ends.
Sulfate-free Products Are Your Friend (Tuoi Amici)
Sulfates in shampoos and conditioners work to create foam for a lathered effect. However, this ingredient can also strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils and moisture – and it will strip your beautifully colour pigment too.
We suggest that you invest in a quality sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that has been specifically formulated for coloured hair. These products will not only nourish your hair, but they will help to prevent fading. Rossano Ferretti Parma’s Splendido Shampoo and conditioner is a great option for all hair types; the formulas have been inspired by the vivid and vital colours of the Italian Riviera (how whimsical)!
Look for Products That Contain Sunflower Seeds
Did you know that sunflower seeds contain loads of essential fatty acids, especially Vitamin E and omega-6 fatty acids? This makes them an excellent natural hair moisturiser – and, when your hair is ultimately moisturised, it’s less likely to fade.
Look for hair care products that are rich in sunflower seeds – and grab some to nibble on while you’re at it! A healthy body equals healthy, fabulous hair!
Wash Your Hair with Tepid Water
While hot showers are bliss, the heated water isn’t so great for your hair colour. This is because the hot water opens your hair’s cuticle, allowing the pigment to run out. To prevent watching the best of your colour go down the drain, rinse your hair with tepid water. And, if you want to seal in moisture and the colour treatment, then rinse your conditioner out with colder water.
Wash Your Hair Less Often (Amiamo il Dry Shampoo!)
Whether your hair is coloured or not, washing your hair every day is a habit you want to avoid. This is one sure way to strip your hair and scalp of natural nourishing oils. It will also make your treatment wash out faster.
Instead, wash your hair every second or third day and use an effective dry shampoo for your “off” days.
Protect Your Hair from Heat
Heat is another element that can strip away colour and damage hair. The good news is that you don’t have to ditch your hot styling tools altogether. You can use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying or styling. Luxury heat protectant sprays will help to lock in moisture during styling and will assist in maintaining your colour overall.
Rossano Ferretti Parma offers a premium paraben-free protective detangling spray that supports and enhances styling rituals while sealing in colour.
Stay Away from Chlorinated Pools
Chlorine is a chemical bleaching agent that can quickly strip colour from your hair. Blonde shades are susceptible to turning a greenish tint, while darker colours can become dull and faded-looking. However, this doesn’t mean that you need to ditch the pool altogether, just get yourself a waterproof swimming cap and ideally protect your hair with a protective product like Brillante Protect & Shine Oil before you dive in!
Learn to Love Leave-in Treatments
Coloured treated hair needs moisture to thrive. It’s this hydration that also keeps your hair nourished and safe from further damage – such as the drying effects of the sun’s UV rays, for example. A leave-in treatment is one way to ensure that your strands are optimally hydrated to encourage a lasting and vibrant colour.
The bottom line is that looking great entails some effort, and this includes maintaining your hair colour treatment. The good news, in this regard, is that the effort is minimal!
