I’ve seen it time and time again: clients coming into the Rossano Ferretti HairSpa at Park Hyatt Vienna or our Belgrade salon, frustrated by slow hair growth or breakage. The truth is, growing long hair doesn’t have to feel like a struggle. With the right techniques, care, and mindset, anyone can enjoy the journey toward healthy, flowing hair.

Here’s what I’ve learned from years behind the chair, and how you can apply it to your own routine.

Understanding Hair Growth: What’s Actually Happening?

Hair grows in cycles. At any given time, around 85–90% of your strands are in the anagen phase, or active growth phase, which can last between 2 and 7 years. The rest are either resting or shedding.

That means how long your hair can grow is partly determined by genetics, but what’s within your control is how well your hair is protected and maintained as it grows.

The real challenge isn’t growing hair, it’s keeping it healthy enough not to break or split as it gets longer.

Follow the right hair care routine

Long hair doesn’t just need to grow. It needs to stay intact. That’s why your daily routine matters so much. The right habits will help you protect your strands and retain the length you gain over time.

Shampooing

  • Wash your hair as often as your scalp needs it. For some, that means every other day. For others, once or twice a week is enough. If you’re unsure, check out this guide on how often to wash your hair.
  • Use lukewarm water when washing. Hot water can strip away your scalp’s natural oils, leading to dryness, frizz, and increased breakage.

Conditioning

Bond-Building Treatments

  • One of the most effective ways to prevent damage and support long-term growth is through a bond-building pre-wash treatment. These formulas are designed to work on dry or slightly damp hair before you shampoo, targeting the internal hair structure rather than just the surface.
  • They help reinforce weak bonds, restore strength to chemically treated or heat-damaged strands, and prepare the hair to better handle the washing process that follows.

Protect your hair from heat and elements

Styling tools can be a wonderful part of your hair routine, helping you shape your look and feel your best. When used thoughtfully and with care, they can absolutely coexist with a healthy hair growth journey. The most important thing is to always protect your hair before applying heat. Using a heat protectant, whether you’re blow-drying or using irons, creates a vital barrier that helps preserve moisture, elasticity, and overall hair health.

Beyond styling tools, environmental exposure can also impact hair health. Strong sunlight, cold winds, humidity, and pollution can all take a toll, particularly on the outer cuticle layer. Just like your skin, your hair benefits from sun protection. If you’re spending time outside – especially during sunny or high UV days consider using a hair product with built-in sun protection, or cover your hair with a silk-lined hat or scarf to shield it from sun damage. This helps reduce dryness, colour fading, and long-term weakening of the strands.

Get regular trims

It might seem counterintuitive, but regular trims are essential for growing long hair and ensuring it remains healthy along the way. Trimming prevents split ends from working their way up the strands, which can result in breakage and slower growth, undoing much of the hard work put into growing and caring for your hair.

Find your nearest Rossano Ferretti HairSpa, located in the world’s most prestigious 5-star hotels and luxury destinations. Our hair spa concept offers a unique experience where clients are offered a truly personalised hair service that not only maintains the health of your hair but can also align with your long-hair goals. This is thanks to our world famous Ferretti Metodo Cut, available exclusively at Rossano Ferretti HairSpas, tailored to enhancing the natural beauty of your hair.

Nutrition tips for flowing locks

Hair growth is not just about what you put on your hair but also what you put in your body. Helping your hair strive as it grows starts from giving it the right nutrition to remain strong and keep damage to a minimum. A diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals is essential for healthy hair growth. Foods like eggs, fish, nuts, and leafy greens are excellent sources of these nutrients.

But while nutrition works from the inside out, external care plays just as important a role in preserving what you grow. One of the most effective ways to reduce breakage and support length retention is by applying a lightweight hair oil daily to the mid-lengths and ends. This helps seal the cuticle, reduce friction, and protect against split ends forming in between trims.

The power of patience

Remember, growing long hair is a gradual process. Patience is key. It’s essential to stay committed to your hair care routine and stay on top of your regular trims, even when results seem slow. On average, hair grows about half an inch per month. With the right care and attention, you’ll soon notice your hair gaining length and strength.

Embrace each phase of your hair growth journey with grace and patience. Celebrate small milestones and enjoy the process of nurturing your hair.

Trust the Process

Hair growth takes time, but time is on your side when your routine is aligned with your goals. Every trim, every nourishing treatment, every gentle brushstroke adds up. The truth is, growing your hair longer isn’t about chasing length, it’s about creating the right conditions for your hair to thrive.

So trust the process, be kind to your hair, and stay patient. The results will come and they’ll be worth it.

What people often overlook is that the way you touch your hair matters just as much as what you use on it. Gentle handling, thoughtful brushing, even how you tie it back - these are small habits that make a long-term difference.
