How to Fix Oily Hair: Tips from the Hair Experts

Hazy summer days are the best. From lazing around the pool and trips to the beach to crisp sundowners, it’s the season for zestful living. But there’s one gripe: oily hair. With the heat and humidity comes a stickiness that clings to our hair to create dull, greasy locks. The good news is that the Rossano Ferretti team has expert summer hair care tips that will help to keep your mane looking refreshed, healthy, and bellissima (gorgeous)!

What are the causes of oily hair?

Before we get to the solutions, let’s get to the root of the problem (no pun intended).

Oily hair is generally caused by one or a combination of the following:

  • Sebum is the oil your scalp naturally produces as part of a defence system against harmful elements. When this sebum mixes with sweat and dirt, the result is a greasy concoction that weighs down your strands.
  • It’s possible to wash your hair too often. Every time you cleanse your locks with shampoo, it signals your scalp to produce more sebum. So, if you wash your hair frequently (like daily), your scalp gets the message that it needs to be in an oil production overdrive.
  • Hair type. Fine or straight hair is especially susceptible to oiliness. This is because it doesn’t have texture or kink to it, so the oil glides down the hair shaft quicker and easier.
  • Some products can cause build-up on your scalp. This build-up may cause irritation and your scalp will try to heal itself – it will be signalled to produce more sebum. When the sebum mixes with product remnants, you have another recipe for, well, disaster!

Tips for oily hair in summer:

As the temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, it’s essential to adapt your hair care routine to keep your locks looking fresh, healthy, and free from excess grease. Here are our expert tips on how to fix oily hair to help you navigate the summer months with ease.

Don’t Over-wash Your Hair

“Try to establish a hair washing regimen that gets you cleansing your hair with shampoo 2-3 times a week only. This way, your scalp won’t feel like it needs to go into overdrive to produce sebum,” says the RF hair team.

“As one of our summer hair tricks, take it easy on your locks by washing them less often and alternating with a dry shampoo instead.”

Vivace Dry Shampoo Creme is our team’s recommendation. Using bio-certified ingredients such as sage, rosemary, and peppermint, this indulgent cream absorbs oil, sweat, and odour, leaving your tresses cleansed and effectively refreshed between washes.

Stay Away from Sulphates

You may find that you need to reassess your usual shampoo and conditioner combo come summer. Ideally, you want hair cleansing products that will minimise grease levels. “Stay away from sulphates,” says the RF experts.

Sulphates strip your hair from sebum – and we know our scalp’s reaction to this is to hastily produce more sebum.

Our team suggests you pump up the summer volume with a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner duo.

“When you rinse your hair, make sure to give it a blast of cold water to help regulate blood flow,” the team adds.

Use a Scalp Scrub

Want to know how to protect your hair in summer – from grease and other toxins? Use a scalp scrub.

A scalp scrub is one of those products that once you try it, you can’t live without it!

RF’s Prodigio Cleansing Scalp Scrub is especially luxurious and works to gently exfoliate your scalp for a deep detox that leaves hair healthy and clean but not stripped from oils. As a plus, it’s also vegan-friendly and cruelty-free – and derived from more than 90% natural ingredients. These ingredients work to protect and soothe your scalp to keep your hair radiant during the summer months.

*Use as a once-a-week replacement to normal shampoo.

Style Your Hair with Purpose

Our team’s natural hair care tips for summer are not over yet! According to the RF hair experts, you can also style your hair to prevent oil build-up.

“In the summer, opt for braids or loose styles that will keep your hair away from a sweaty face or neck. A braided style will help deter you from running your hands through your hair (dirty hands can make hair oilier quicker),” they say.

“This is also one of our best beach hair care tips,” the team adds.

So – from the best luxury hair care products to the best summer hairstyles, keeping your locks fresh, glowing, and grease-free is easy. Oily hair doesn’t have to rain on your summertime parade!
